{"id":4599,"date":"2012-12-11T22:32:35","date_gmt":"2012-12-12T03:32:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.monocoque-metalworks.com\/main\/?p=4599"},"modified":"2015-02-18T13:05:28","modified_gmt":"2015-02-18T18:05:28","slug":"e-type-series-1-5-roadster-rear-wing-repair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.monocoque-metalworks.com\/main\/2012\/12\/e-type-series-1-5-roadster-rear-wing-repair\/","title":{"rendered":"E-Type Series 1.5 Roadster Rear Wing Repair"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Once the chassis legs and rear bulkhead were repaired, we were able to fit the floors and inner sills into place.\u00a0 This allows us to form up and weld in all of the necessary patches to the bottoms of the B-post panels that were cut out due to rust.<\/p>\n<p>After several hours of forming up small patches, I got a little bored and decided to tackle a bigger issue that also needs to be resolved before the floors can be attached permanently.<\/p>\n<p>The LH rear wing was rusted out at the bottom of the B-Post.\u00a0 This is very common and we have started forming up and offering a patch for this area.\u00a0 But before we can weld this in on this particular car, the LH rear wing has some past accident damage that was poorly repaired in the past and needs some serious help&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>And that&#8217;s what it got!\u00a0 Wow &#8211; this turned out alot better than I had hoped &#8211; I had my doubts on this one!\u00a0 Take a look!<\/p>\n<p>NOTE:  These pictures aren&#8217;t as crisp as usual because the battery in the good camera died and this was a hot and heavy work session, so I just kept going with the camera on my cell phone &#8211; which is actually still pretty good for a phone!<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-4599 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-large'><dl class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<dt class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/www.monocoque-metalworks.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC_04211.jpg'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"425\" src=\"https:\/\/www.monocoque-metalworks.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC_04211-1024x680.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large\" alt=\"\" aria-describedby=\"gallery-1-4618\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.monocoque-metalworks.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC_04211-1024x680.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.monocoque-metalworks.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC_04211-150x99.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.monocoque-metalworks.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/DSC_04211-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/dt>\n\t\t\t\t<dd class='wp-caption-text gallery-caption' id='gallery-1-4618'>\n\t\t\t\tHere is a reminder of what we got to work with coming out of the blasting booth. As usual &#8211; even with everything I&#8217;ve seen, I am just NEVER going to learn! COME ON &#8211; this is actually one of the very few panels on an E-Type that you actually CAN get behind!  Oh well, it&#8217;s not a virgin hit anymore, but at least their laziness also carried over to the repair &#8211; they drilled 4 holes, hit the dent puller a few times, and then got out the filler. I could have made quick work of this with the planishing hammer, and that would have erased the crease completely, but the planishing hammer would not fit in the wheel well.  It was cold today, and I worked up such a sweat on this that the windows in the shop fogged up! When the shape is finally smooth and where we want it, we can go ahead and TIG up the holes. You can still see the deepest part of the crease &#8211; only the force of the planishing hammer with it&#8217;s hardened heads could have taken that out completely. Some shops will go nuts at this stage with a DA to show you a beautiful surface, but how thin is that wing after that?  That&#8217;s a BAD idea &#8211; DON&#8217;T DO IT! As we said &#8211; it will still need LIGHT (1\/32&#8243;) filler and block sanding &#8211; I tell the customers to load the panel with a skim coat of filler, then block sand it almost all back off, allowing the panel to &#8220;take what it wants&#8221; here and there &#8211; but block sand it until there is metal all over the place.
