This project is the total restoration of a 1963 fixed-head coupe monocoque shell and bonnet. This car was originally exported to Germany and is left-hand drive. The shell is in very poor condition, and is going to need “the works” – so stop back often for an in-depth look of a very involved shell restoration.

New Paint for an Old Friend!

Just before Christmas, I had the opportunity to visit my customers and friends, Alan and Maragaret.  I stopped in one Sunday afternoon during the holiday season to see their freshly painted ’62 E-Type FHC – whose body shell was restored … Continue reading

Another rescued E-Type Shell goes home!

A couple of weeks ago, I was able to experience a real milestone for myself and a customer by delivering their restored E-Type shell. It was actually a couple of years ago when we agreed to work together on this … Continue reading

Replacing the Boot Floor and filler panels

One of the last areas to take care of on this shell was the boot floor.  Before the shell was blasted, I was thinking we’d be able to get away with NOT replacing the filler panels as well, but after … Continue reading

Another Series 1 E-Type Bonnet Assembly

The main panels of this bonnet were pretty rough – and were from 2 different bonnets, so I was a little concerned about how all this was going to come together in the end.  Let’s take a look:

Restoring the doors on this Series 1 E-Type FHC

As things wound down on the shell, we couldn’t put off restoring the doors any longer. We did alot of doors earlier this year, and I needed a break, so I put these off until late in this restoration. Eventually, … Continue reading

Reshaping a Series 1 E-Type Bonnet Center Section

Now it’s time to turn our attention to the center section of this bonnet. This is the gold center section that was part of the “junkyard bonnet” that the customer found in the back of a box truck at a … Continue reading

Restoring a pair of Series 1 E-Type Inner Valances

Next, we blasted the inner valances and gave them some much needed TLC. One unfortunate feature of these, as well as the rest of this bonnet, was extremely heavy surface rust on the inner surface – mostly inside the wheel … Continue reading

Another Series 1 lower valance restored.

We do ALOT of these, and have it down to a real science. This is the one for the ’63 coupe currently in the rotisserie.  The car came in with two bonnets – neither of which was original to the … Continue reading

My least favorite E-Type repair!

This one has to be the most nerve-wracking repair out there – the rusted out wheel arch on a Coupe or 2+2’s rear wing… Roadsters don’t have any inner panel in the rear wheel well – if you stick your … Continue reading

New E-Type Driveshaft and Transmission Tunnel

The next order of business for this shell is to close in the box sections where we have hidden the subframe rails, and also replace the crusty driveshaft tunnel and transmission sides with new pieces formed in our fabrication shop.

Monocoque Metalworks “Hidden Subframe”

Many of the shells that we restore are treated to extra stiffening inside the sills, cross-member, and other box sections. We call this the “hidden subframe” because once the shell repairs are complete, you can’t see any of it, and … Continue reading
