1963 Open Two Seater – SOLD!

Well, this is it – THIS is the one you have been waiting for! This is probably one of the best condition, most original, unrestored Series 1 roadsters left…

The REAL DEAL - a virgin, all-original, numbers-matching, red on red, 1963 Series 1 3.8 Roadster. This is exactly what I drove to high school every day Senior year, and let me tell you, the adventures that you can have in a car like this are PRICELESS!

I recently purchased this car from the estate of a local gentleman who passed away a few years ago. He was the second owner of this 1963 Roadster, and that is documented. His daughter told me that he only ever took it out to drive to the golf course, and then it was parked in a small barn behind their home in 1988 and never driven again. The car comes with the original Warranty card with the original purchaser’s name and address, and also the original (and mostly unused) service coupon book… Ironically, the car was purchased in New York, NY on October 10th, 1963 – exactly 51 years ago – and the car has 51,000 original miles…

This E-Type is an original red car with a red interior. The originality on this car is excellent – everything is as it should be. Of course, all numbers match…

The original red interior is tired, although the seats and door panels have been recovered in the past. Everything is there and in excellent restorable condition.

The children of the previous owner were working with another local Jaguar enthusiast to sell the car. He removed the car from a small barn behind their home, washed it off, and was in the process of getting the car up and running when we purchased the car as you see in the photos. This is why the carbs have been cleaned up, and the fuel pump has been removed from the tank and replaced with a rebuilt original, although it has not yet been installed. He did not finish the work of actually starting the engine, but the car does crank over easily and has good compression. You could have this car running in one afternoon, or just skip that and go straight to restoration, but know that the internal condition of the engine is excellent…

The engine turns over with good compression, and everything under the bonnet is original and correct except for the blue coil and a few replaced hoses. You won't be scouring eBay and the like for years for every little nut and bolt to make this car right - it is ALL there!

The original color is a more orange-tinted red than what you see in these photos – it was repainted with a light coat of a darker red which is not sticking very well in some spots – you can see the original color where the paint has peeled between the LH door and bonnet. Some bodywork was done in the seam behind the door and above the outer sills. I have also detected a small patch of filler in the very forward edge of the bonnet’s nose itself from a minor bump in the garage or something in its past… These are the ONLY evidence of any filler that I see in the entire car. So you can take comfort in knowing what is under this paint – faded original paint – that’s it…

This E-Type has never been in ANY type of accident. The bonnet is EXCELLENT – NO rust, and only a few small dents, plus the minor repair in the very forward edge of the nose. The doors are also excellent – no rust in the bottom of the doors. Finally, the boot lid is also excellent – no rust, no dents… The bonnet, as well as the boot lid and doors all fit beautifully – the gaps are perfect.

The car is not completely “rust free”, but for an E-Type, it’s close! There is rust in the floors and it should be treated to full floors on both sides, but the inner sills look good and the car still has its original outer sills. The boot floor does have rust and will also need replacement, but the rear lower valances are rust-free. All of the other areas where E-Types typically rust are excellent and rust-free.

You just don't find them like this anymore - don't let this be the only view of this E-Type you get to see! Life is short - if you've spent a good deal of yours searching for the right E-Type restoration project, this is it! And with a car this solid and complete, every dollar you spend in acquiring it will come back to you THREE-FOLD in the ease and lowered expense of its restoration!

You just don’t find them like this anymore… If it were not for the fact that I already have 2 E-Types of my own (one of which is my original ’63 roadster and I don’t need 2…) – this would never leave my hands – it is a keeper! THIS is a car that can be a 100-point show winner, or the cream of the crop at the top auction houses of the world. This is a virgin E-Type, that REALLY DID come out of a barn! Every nut, bolt, screw and washer is factory correct. No-one has molested the body or engine, and the condition of everything is quite good. For these reasons, the restoration will be faster, less expensive, and easier than it would be with the typical E-Type restoration projects that become available. It will also be more satisfying along the ay, and economically rewarding when completed. The original perfection of this body – the alignment, no dents, no wrecks, minimal rust – is priceless…

The car rolls (not easily but she is slowly loosening up…) and steers, and we have a clear US title.

This is it – this is the Series 1 E-Type roadster of your dreams – don’t screw around – BUY IT – quick!

Serious inquiries only, please.

1962 Open Two-Seater – SOLD!

This one is beginning to come together as a complete project, and so it’s time to put it on here and start out finding her a good home. There are not any photos, as this exists currently as several “piles” and a checklist of what I do and do not have. I’d jump on it if you’re interested, though, as I don’t expect a 3.8 roadster project to last long – they are almost IMPOSSIBLE to find now!

This car is another example of “parting out in reverse” – being assembled from pieces of several incomplete projects we have taken in over the years. This one finally hit “critical mass” lately so that we can now piece together the complete car.

Build date of the chassis number is July 1st, 1962 – it is a non-numbers matching project. I do not have a title but the chassis number is clean – I may be able to get a title for it, or I could sell with a bill of sale only. Includes:

  • Body Shell – Restorable body shell – currently in two halves, but those halves are solid where it counts! You will need the usual – full floors, inner and outer sills, boot floor, etc. – BUT…
  • NEW Panels! – Project will include EVERY SINGLE body panel that we make here that the restoration of the body shell requires – NEW! Including, but not limited to: all sill closing panels and gussets, new crossmember, rear lower bulkhead, all tunnel panels, heater box repair panels, aluminum engine and radiator shields, etc.
  • Doors & Decklid – Restorable OTS doors (project will include NEW door skins and lower door shell repair panels) and hinges, very good decklid and hinges (and latches), and perfect OTS fuel lid and hinge.
  • Series 1 Bonnet – Restorable bonnet pieces – excellent center section and wings, solid inner valances and lower valance, and all NEW inner panels and flanges.
  • Top Frame – Complete and correct Series 1 convertible top (hood) frame in good restorable condition. Includes latches, mounts, and original hardtop brackets.
  • Engine – Free-turning, rebuildable 3.8 engine. Includes correct E-Type oil sump, baffle, and pickup, E-type oil filter housing, smooth cam covers in good condition, 3.8 flywheel, etc.
  • Triple Carbs – Complete and correct 3.8 E-Type intake manifold, carburetors (E-Type HD8’s), and linkage setup
  • Exhaust – E-Type exhaust manifolds
  • Suspension – Complete front and rear E-Type suspension in good condition – third member is tight 3.54:1 positraction unit
  • Steering – Correct, Straight and restorable manual steering rack
  • Frame rails – Complete engine frame set (condition is questionable on side frames) with original picture frame with this number stamped, and good bonnet carrier bracket
  • Brakes – Complete 3.8 E-type braking system – pedal box with bellows, front and rear calipers, handbrake calipers, handbrake lever, reservoir bottles, etc.
  • Instruments – Complete dash assembly with all gauges and switches
  • Interior – Complete dot-pattern aluminum pieces with NEW steel center console, 3.8 radio console, ashtray, etc., aluminum dot radio, shifter, and center console pieces, etc.
  • Lighting – all 4 signal lamp assemblies (rears are correct roadster units) with good lenses, complete reverse lamp assembly, interior lamp assembly, and covered headlamp chrome (no headlamp glass…)
  • Chrome – Most chrome, good outer and inner door and window handles, motif bar, rear bonnet grill, SOME bumpers and over-riders, etc.
  • Accessories – Original and correct glass washer bottle with motor and bracket, complete wiper setup including motor (dated 10-61), linkage, rack, and arms, also correct early style Series 1 heater assembly.

What’s missing currently. Here are the “major” pieces that are currently “missing” – but if you read on, you’ll see that most of them are things that you ALWAYS buy new, or you DO NOT want anyway for a car you intend to drive. If you prefer the original components, I can dig them up from one of many sources I have for used parts:

  • Steering – I do have the steering rack, and now have the correct column as well with the knuckles on both ends. I do not currently have the upper column, or a steering wheel. I basically just haven’t run across any in my travels. I can probably dig this up, though…
  • Seats – I do not have a pair of 3.8 OTS seats, but I CAN make them new and the used ones are ALWAYS rusted out anyway… I need a good excuse to pattern and form them up anyway.
  • Wheels and tires – you’re going to buy new wheels and tires, and this is currently all apart, so you don’t need those…
  • Fuel Tank – they’re never any good, and it’s IN THE CAR WITH YOU – I always recommend purchasing this new.
  • Windshield – another thing you’re just not going to find in good used condition after 50 years – also something you always buy new.
  • Transmission and Bellhousing – I can get either a 3.8 or a 4.2 original trans. OR – you can purchase the project as-is with no transmission and you can perform the 5-speed upgrade of your choice. I DO have the correct 3.8 driveshaft.
  • Radiator – I do have access to my choice of 2 original Marston aluminum radiators, and I can get the 3.8 header tank and bracket as well. OR – I recommend buying all of this stuff new – purchase the project without these components and upgrade to an aftermarket aluminum radiator – also highly recommended.
  • Generator – if you really want the original 3.8 generator, I can dig one up. Otherwise, I’d go with a more reliable alternator.
  • Door internals – I DO have all of this – including the glass, but it is Series 2… That means that the glass and window channels are correct, the window regulators are correct but take the wrong style handle (I can probably modify these without too much fuss…), and the door latching mechanisms are incorrect. This is not a big deal and we can figure this out…

SO – pretty complete, but all apart. One thing that I do want to point out is that I have tried to put this together “right” – meaning that the pieces are correct for the chassis number of the car – or close enough to be modified with my help. This is NOT some hodge-podge of parts from Automatic Series 2 2+2’s slapped together to LOOK like a 3.8 roadster…

If you’re up to the challenge, everything you need is there to build a 3.8 roadster – if you don’t see it listed above, just ask! There are undoubtedly a few bits missing here and there, but my intention here is to provide something as complete as possible, so if I have it, it’s yours.

If you call or write and sound serious, I can start pulling things together and take photos of the components – but once this all gets semi-assembled into a pile that looks like an E-Type, the price goes up – get in the game now while it’s still in the “pre-assembly” stage!

1966 Fixed Head Coupe – SOLD!

I just dragged this one home this weekend, but figured I’d put it up here and get started on finding her new owner – although I’m already teasing myself that maybe I’ll keep this one!

I don't even have good photos yet - here is the shell still on the truck.

Built in November of 1966, this is an incomplete E-Type project that we are in the process of turning into a complete project by adding back the parts that are missing. This car was parted out recently, so the original engine is gone, as are many other bits, but the shell, bonnet, frame rails, original hatch, front suspension, etc. all remain. The chassis number and body number match the data plate – which we have – along with clear paperwork. We may also be able to get the original transmission back – I’m working on that.

This shell is rock solid where it really counts - the forward and rear bulkheads are excellent, the roof is perfect, and so is the drive tunnel. It will need some floor work, and inner and outer sills, gussets, end plates, boot floor, etc. - but they ALL need that, and that just means that we'll have her opened up enough to put in one of our hidden subframes!

We can definitely add a rear suspension, steering rack, and doors to this to make it a complete “roller”, and could also complete the car by utilizing pieces from other “dead” E-Types that are not listed on this page.

The body shell and bonnet are excellent candidates for our metalwork – the rust is typical but minimal, and we may even be able to save much of the floors. The shell is straight, never wrecked, and a little better than most that we see. The bonnet pieces are also straight and better than average.

Here's the best part - we have clear title paperwork, and the original data plate, and the original picture fram with chassis number, AND the body tag. So we're good to go to build this back up, and we're working on getting the original transmission back as well. In addition, these frame rails look good so far - I think they will be OK and useable. I have a steering rack, as well as a complete Series 1 rear suspension - and just about everything else you would need to build this back up into a car - and the previous owner would love to see that happen!

Give me a ring if you think you might want to take this one on – it’s a bigger project with the missing pieces – or would also be a great platform for a vintage racer!

1969 Fixed Head Coupe – SOLD!

We need space and we need to simplify things around here – plain and simple. This project is NOT for the “faint of heart” — but it IS for the “low of budget”… and I’m ready to make a deal that fits yours!

If you are an avid reader of the blog, you'll recognize this car as the one whose body shell we used for a 2+2 conversion. We did that because this body shell had roof damage, and the customer wanted a period Webasto sunroof. We now have another body shell for this car - also a Series 2 FHC - with a straight roof. Plus, this car is already disassembled, so you won't have to pay for that work, which is no small task!

This car was purchased as a running project car. The body was very rough, but we did use it for another project. We have since replaced the body, so that the car is complete again, but is now apart and a TOTAL project.

So – the running gear that you see in these photos has all been removed from this yellow body, and the suspension and engine have been re-attached to another Series 2 coupe body. The body that will be supplied with the car also needs extensive metalwork, and can be supplied with as many panels as you like and some additional shell pieces to help you rebuild the body in the rougher areas – namely the forward bulkhead – I will throw in TWO extra forward bulkhead sections… We currently have a MAJOR space issue, and this project needs to find a good home, so call if you are interested – it’s available QUITE reasonably!

Built in November of 1969, this Series 2 coupe represents the ultimate development of the 6-cylinder E-Type 2-seat coupe as a Grand Touring car. By this point, all of the kinks were worked out of the E-Type’s design and assembly – for example, the Series 2 braking system is excellent and often retro-fitted to earlier E-Types.

This car is very well optioned for all-weather driving. It's not shown in this shot, but the car has factory AC, and we have all of the original components (from another really rough donor - they are not in the best of shape, but are all there). The car even has a rare heated rear window!

This is a completely numbers matching project – chassis, body, engine, and transmission all match the original data plate, the windshield and door striker chassis number tags are present, and the car has a clear US title. This was originally a 4-speed, air-conditioned car with manual rack and pinion steering, with a primrose yellow exterior and black interior, but can be finished in any color combination and mechanical configuration that you desire.

This is a complete car – there are buckets and boxes FULL of the correct Rubery Owen bolts, Cheney Hose clamps, and all the little fittings and bits. There are a few items missing, but they are few and far between and we can help you source them. The car is currently assembled as a roller, and comes with two pallets FULL of boxes of parts. If you would like to take on this project, it is PICK UP ONLY – it’s too much of a basket case at the moment to pack up and ship. One guy with a truck and a car trailer could easily pick it up though, and we will of course help load her up!

This E-Type has every factory option available EXCEPT power steering, but… we also have a complete power steering setup from another Series 2 coupe that it can be built with if desired.

The car currently has no bonnet – BUT – we can include restorable Series 2 bonnet panels – or even Series 1 bonnet panels – it’s up to you!

The engine is low miles and DOES run! You would probably want to rebuild the engine as part of a complete restoration, but knowing that it runs now ensures that there are not going to be any expensive surprises during the rebuild...

1970 Open Two-Seater – SOLD!

This project has been sold to a gentleman in Scottsdale, AZ with LOTS of vision! We combined this body shell with the drivetrain from another Series 2 coupe “parts car”, added seats, other roadster components, etc., and restorable panels to build a Series 1 bonnet. We even were able to provide a set of rebuildable Weber carbs!

Here's what we put together for this customer - this car has been for sale on this page for well over a year - someone finally had the vision (and the guts!) to take the plunge and it's looking like a Series 1 roadster already! Look through our blogs for the story of this project being pulled together from parts and pieces from many E-Type wrecks. Could have been you!

The new owner was once a body man in the coachworks of Rolls Royce, so we waived the requirement that the body be restored here, and sold the car as a total project, but did include a full complement of Monocoque Metalworks panels to complete the job. He plans to build a Series 1.5 roadster, with Series 1 external bodywork, and a Series 2 interior.

I’m proud of what we did here – this was pieced together from several “junk” E-Types. It truly was an example of “parting out in reverse” – if you include the various bonnet panels, there are NINE E-Types represented in the pile of parts being delivered to Arizona!

This is not a project for the faint of heart, but building an E-Type from the ground up is the only way to get a good one that is going to last. You have to start somewhere, and everything is there to build an OTS to any specifications you desire. This shell is rough, but when restored in our shop, it will be one of the most solid E-Type shells in existence!

Built in April of 1970, this Series 2 roadster was originally dark blue with a black interior. This car is an abandoned project that we were able to rescue last year, but unfortunately, not before the original engine and transmission were lost. We then used the shell for another project…

This car is now an example of “parting out” in reverse, as over the past year, we have acquired all of the necessary components to rebuild the car. The car now again has the correct Series 2 4.2-liter engine and wide ratio 4-speed that it was originally dispatched with, and most other components are present. We also have acquired another Series 2 OTS shell with boot lid and doors, and enough solid panels to build a correct Series 2 bonnet. We’ve rounded out the package with a complete Series 2 front and rear suspension and braking system. As a result, this car is now a 98% complete Series 2 OTS project, missing only the hood (convertible top) frame, and a few minor bits.

As a Series 2 roadster with a non-matching engine, this car is an excellent platform for an upgraded E-Type used for spirited back-country driving, track days, or as a full race E-Type. We can even convert the monocoque shell and bonnet to Series 1 specifications if you desire, keep the Series 2 body but add Series 3 flared wings front and rear – the options are limited only by your imagination! Make no mistake – everything you need is there, including all of the original data plates and tags, and the car does have a clear US title.

1964 Fixed Head Coupe – SOLD!

This project has found a good home! – It has been sold to a gentleman in Oklahoma, who plans to build a very spirited E-Type road car with a high performance engine and other handling upgrades. First, it will have it’s shell completely restored here, and we will also be supplying a carbon-fiber and aluminum bonnet. Look for the story of this work on our blog next year!

Not too pretty at the moment, but the basis for a great E-Type is here!

Built in May of 1964, this car was originally dispatched “black on black” with both a black interior and exterior. Over the years it has lost its original engine and transmission, but the chassis and body are both original, and the car has a clear US title. The original engine has been replaced with a period 3.8-liter Jaguar engine from another model, and an original E-Type Moss 4-speed has also been sourced.

Everything is there except the bonnet. The engine is a period 3.8-liter from a Mark 2, and while it is currently 8:1, can be rebuillt with new 9:1 pistons and the head rebuilt, restored, and painted gold. The car also includes the correct Moss 4-speed transmission, bellhousing, and flywheel.

The car can be rebuilt to its original factory configuration, or can be upgraded with different transmission, carbs, brakes, etc. The possibilities with this car are endless – from a well-restored original 3.8-liter coupe in any color combination, to an upgraded car with any number of modifications to match its original, sinister color scheme.

1970 Fixed Head Coupe – SOLD!

We finally found this old girl a good home! An English gentleman who lives nearby is going to take her on, and has every intention of getting her up and running this Spring to have some Summer fun! Then, he’ll look into tearing her back down to do the job right!

The bonnet is off in this photo to help you visualize the project better. The bonnet is unrestorable, but does have all of the chrome and hardware, and the inner valances are OK. We can build an excellent Series 2 bonnet from our stock of used, original panels.

This car is a recent acquisition from a customer who elected to purchase a restored E-Type that became available near their home. This is a complete, numbers-matching E-Type that was originally maroon with a black interior.

The car needs a total restoration, but everything is there, and alot of it still works currently! This engine runs STRONG - with good compression in all cylinders. I think that with a little more tinkering, I could get this to the point where you could drive it around the block. That doesn't accomplish much, but does show that what's here is not all seized up - the odometer shows 46,000 miles, and I believe that is all the wear and tear that these mechanicals have on them. Once the body shell and bonnet are restored, this would be an easy restoration.

Looks are very deceiving on this car – it looks great from 10 feet away, but the body had extensive rust in the past, and was repaired by an amateur restorer who used ALOT of filler over overlapped metal panels. The body shell needs total restoration in our shop, and the bonnet is a total write off – it is unrestorable. That’s the bad news…

The GOOD news is that the car is complete, all of the components are in good condition, and the engine runs STRONG – with good compression in all cylinders. The shell is also bad in the lower areas, but actually quite GOOD in the upper areas – so replacement of the floors, sills, and just about everything else in the lower 10 inches, will result in a rock solid shell when this is completed.

The dashpad is a mess, the carpets are gone, but the important components like gauges, steering wheel, console, etc. are all there and in VERY GOOD condition! Use your imagination to envision this same photo with just a new dashpad and new black carpets, and you can see what I mean when I say this is an easy restoration once the car has a new body shell and bonnet!

This can be a 100-point E-Type. Or, because it already has the Series 2 braking system, it also makes a great platform for a high-performance driver. We can restore the shell and build a Series 2 bonnet in steel that are perfect, or convert the car to Series 1 configuration – whatever you desire!

**********

Even MORE Projects – AVAILABLE!

We have more stuff than what is listed – it seems like there are E-Type parts all over the place! And, good project cars like those above coming and going all the time – give us a ring if you don’t see what you are looking for and we might have something that will work!

The E-Types we have available are “rough” in alot of people’s eyes, but they just don’t have our imagination, experience, and most importantly – our ability to rebuild ANY monocoque body shell – which is what kills most E-Types. I have trained my eyes over the past 25 years to “see” the car differently than most – for example, I don’t even look at the lower 12 inches of the car – I know it is all getting replaced anyway!

We are literally bursting at the seams with E-Type cars and parts! Most of our project cars are shown without bonnets, but believe me, we have them! Any of the project cars above can be fitted with any type of bonnet you desire - Series 1 or 2 - built from original panels that are properly restored. This shot shows most of the center sections we have currently, but all of the inner valances, wings, and lower valances were packed onto pallets and taken over to the warehouse. And we have plenty of parts too - engines, transmissions, chrome, seats - you name it! Whatever vision you have for YOUR E-Type, we can make it happen!

Instead, I look for things like completeness, engines that run or at least turn freely, condition of the non-body components, straight roofs, etc. I stand by my “mantra” that the ONLY way to get a “good” E-Type is to build it yourself, and I tell people all the time – “If you’re going to buy one, either spend $10,000 or $70,000 – anything in between is going to be junk that you end up tearing down to the point of something you could have bought for $10,000 in the first place…”

There are alot of people out there that buy and sell E-Types, part them out, etc. because they know it is one way to make a quick dollar on a previous owner whose health is failing, has hit hard times, or just doesn’t know what their car is worth. It has been going on for decades and it drives me crazy to see 50 “E-Type Wanted in any condition” ads in the back of Hemmings every month…

That’s not what we are about here – we don’t buy and sell E-Types – we BUILD them. I rescue these cars and offer them to see them survive instead of being parted out, and truth be told, also because I’d have 100 E-Types probably if I could! So instead, I indulge my addiction by building great E-Types for other people!

When you purchase one of our projects, we’re ALL in it together. I’ll be building your shell and bonnet myself, and overseeing the rest of the restoration like it is my own car. If you choose to just take the car as a project with a new shell, you get “tech support” for life – ask any question, and if I don’t know the answer, I know who does. In addition, we stay in touch with the previous owner, and keep them up to date on the status of the restoration, which they can follow along with through our blog.

That being said…

E-Type Projects – WANTED!

We are always looking for good “core” body shells and bonnets, but can also find a GOOD home for your wrecked or rusty E-Type! If your car needs TOTAL body restoration and you think it’s beyond what you are willing to get involved with, but you don’t want to see the car parted out – give us a call!

I would love to find your E-Type a good home and be a part of restoring it properly. When I say that I will make sure it is restored and isn’t parted out, I mean it – and I have the references to prove it.

Call me anytime – Chuck (443) 907-2287
